Shatranj is a medieval middle eastern historical chess variant played on an 8x8 board.
The Horse/Knight, Rook, King, and Pawn move the same as their modern chess counterparts. The Alfil (Elephant) and Ferz move as below:
The King and Ferz are always directly across from eachother, however, which is left or right of center is up to the players. The decision does not give either side an advantage or significantly affect the game.
Pawns are immediately promoted to Ferz when they reach the opposite rank.
